Movie : Magadheera (UA)

Rating : 4.5/5

Some films are good enough to be watched. Some films are good enough to be loved. Some films are good enough to be remembered. But very few are films that are good enough to be watched, loved and remembered forever. If you guess which is one of those films, then it's undoubtedly the Ram Charan starrer MAGADHEERA, an epic film which you shouldn't miss in your lifetime.

MAGADHEERA is a fairytale, in simple words. The film has blended slices of action, adventure, drama, fantasy, romance, war and almost everything you can expect in a great film. But the true fact that takes the cake is that MAGADHEERA is packed with brilliance in almost every corner: Be it the storyline, be it the performances, be it the engaging screenplay, be it the action scenes, or the visual effects: The film steals the show in every aspect among which the visual effects are the best to be noted.

For those who have seen other works of Rajamauli, this film is a new experience for them. And for those who haven't, this would be truly an exciting and thrilling watch. It's not just a visual spectacle, but a miracle, the best of its kind, better say.

Coming to the performance, Ram Charan needs to be praised for his powerful performance throughout the entire film. He emotes, fights, loves, and portrays every emotion very well. The war episode is the best example of it. Kajal Aggarwal too is good, she plays it for the most part. Dev Gill redefines the meaning of villainism in films. Srihari is fantastic. All other actors, including Sunil, are good and well cast.

The film's visuals are something I am willing to write about. The visual work is so good that you are likely to be blown away. Several films which have good visual effects look good only on the big screen, but not on the small screen. This is not the scenario here in MAGADHEERA. I myself haven't watched it in theatre. I had first watched it little on TV, little on Internet (Don't worry I don't watch pirated versions), and the full version on the Telugu original DVD, with subtitles, although it's a pleasure that a film like MAGADHEERA doesn't require any subtitles to be watched and loved. The biggest pleasure is that MAGADHEERA won the national award for the best visual effects.

The action scenes are very crisp and perfectly choreographed. Even I feel it that in the films of Rajamauli, fights are more like a poetry rather than just mere pieces of bloodshed. Even here, the fights are like a poetry with energetic and emotional music running in background. The film is well written, and has several scenes that would be written in the golden pages of classic Indian Cinema. Perhaps, the entire film is to be written in the book of Indian Cinema, in golden letters, as one of the gems we have.

However, the film has some flaws, which are not easy to ignore. The first half, after the introduction scene and the song slows down a little. It isn't boring, but the real story takes some time to build up in the first half. Songs aren't very good except the first one. Yes, the background music is of course excellent. Besides, the length of the film, 2 hour 46 minutes, could have been trimmed down a little bit.? For those who mind length even in such films, I recommend watching the Hindi dubbed version, which is dubbed very well and has a runtime of 2 hours and 10 minutes approx.

But despite of these very flaws, the film is watchable and memorable at its best. To sum up, MAGADHEERA is a solid action film that has everything you can expect from a film of this genre. I had purchased the single disc edition, and I am still looking for the 2 disc edition. Are you too going to watch it? I think, yes.
