All of the jaded professional critics who have heaped faint praise, that A Million Miles Away is wholesome but "failed to launch," because AMMA follows too many biopic tropes, are all caucasians - who have less than zero direct experience with the immigrant/migrant experience.

One or two of these critics have a pedantic grasp of racial and cultural discrimination in the USA, but absolutely nothing directly heartfelt, let alone experienced on the receiving side of matters.

Yes, this is an authorized biopic based on a memoir. Yes, it is faithful to the facts and history portrayed with fidelity orders of magnitude greater than white boy Oppenheimer (which I also liked, despite all of the latter's egregious disregard for historical fact). I think AMMA is the best biopic of 2023 for its heartfelt, inspirational honesty.

I never once was moved to tears by O.

Tears ran down both checks when Hernandez was offered 1st mission specialist on STS-128. He'd just investigated the Discovery re-entry disaster that took the life of close friend & astronaut mentor, Chawla. That's when 11x NASA rejected Hernandez answered, "I've only been waiting [actually, decently & earnestly striving] for this for 30 years."

I teared up, once again, when Hernandez's elementary school teacher, Mrs Young, (Michelle Kruziec) tells STS-128 pre-launch Hernandez that she was waiting all her life for this achievement. I had two such teachers, who recognized my "giftedness" and rescued me from years of racist 1960s "educational tacking" that had literally classified & segregated me as a moron.

Hernandez's many repeated apologies to his father, face-to-face & via mutually loved proxies, for costing his father (Julio Cesar Cedillo) a life-aspirational Matomoros homestead isn't a trope. It's Hernandez's respect for his father's non-storybook sacrifice of a triumphant return to a much loved homeland. Papa chose permanent sojournership. Hernandez knows where he comes from and recognizes/respects every sacrifice made out of love. My own father never came anything close to that in my life.

I know, deep in my heart & bones, what those moments look, sound & feel like. They're always quiet, to the pont of understatement, but they are decisively pivotal. They're on full display in AMMA.

Michael Pena & Rosa Salazar are fantastic. So is the entire ensemble. Especially scrupulously honest & hard working (non-gang-banger) hermano-cousin Beto (Bobby Soto).

The captain helming the entirety of AMMA, Alejandra Marquedz Abella, not only achieved orbit, but stuck the landing, too.

Bravo!

"A Million Miles Away" is a breathtaking masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of cinema to touch the very depths of the soul. This film is not just a movie; it's an emotional odyssey that takes you on a rollercoaster of feelings, leaving you profoundly moved, inspired, and utterly transformed.

From the moment the opening scene graced the screen, I was captivated by the sheer beauty of the storytelling. The characters are not just actors; they are vessels of raw emotion, pouring their hearts into their roles. It's as if their emotions leap out of the screen, filling the theater with a tangible energy that envelops the audience.

The plot, too, is a thing of beauty. It weaves a narrative so poignant, so delicately threaded with the tapestry of human connection, that it resonates with the deepest recesses of the heart. The way the story unfolds, layer by layer, unveiling the characters' vulnerabilities, hopes, and dreams, is a testament to the artistry of the filmmakers.

The cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking. The sweeping shots of distant galaxies and the intimate close-ups of our protagonists create a visual symphony that complements the emotional depth of the story perfectly. Each frame is a work of art, meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of wonder and awe.

The soundtrack deserves special mention. The music, like a soulful melody, weaves itself into the very fabric of the film, enhancing every emotional beat and drawing you even closer to the characters' experiences. It's a soundtrack that will linger in your heart long after the credits roll.

But what truly sets "A Million Miles Away" apart is its ability to explore the human condition in a way that feels genuine and unfiltered. It tackles themes of love, loss, hope, and the indomitable spirit of the human soul with such honesty that it becomes impossible not to relate to the characters' struggles and triumphs.

As the credits rolled and the lights came up in the theater, I found myself not just wiping away tears but also reflecting on the profound impact this film had on my soul. "A Million Miles Away" isn't just a movie; it's a reminder of the beauty of the human experience, a testament to the power of storytelling, and a journey that will stay with me forever.

If there were a rating higher than ten stars, this film would undoubtedly deserve it. It's a masterpiece that reminds us of the infinite capacity of the human heart to feel, to love, and to dream. "A Million Miles Away" is a gift to cinema, a treasure to humanity, and an emotional journey you won't want to miss.
A true movie that doesn't it take itself too seriously at the same time. It could be goofy at times but throughout the entire film they hammer down the value of finding a goal WORKING HARD and achieving your dreams while pushing the beauty of a strong family to back you up. It's great to see ORIGINAL work from Hollywood these days and don't carry identity politics just to push a divisive message. Great cast and acting that definitely nailed down the laughs a lot with the hard emotions that would come along with this chosen life style. More movies like these and less bloated budget CGI nightmares.
