7 Chinese Brothers is a song by REM. It is also an ultra low budgetindependent film directed by Bob Byington. Jason Schwarztman playsLarry, a lazy, lying slacker always playing stupid pranks and whodrinks too much from a Styrofoam cup to make out he is not analcoholic.

At the beginning of the film we seem him get fired from job forstealing liquor from the bar. His only friend is a nurse who supplieshim with stolen pills and the nurse looks after Larry's grandmother atthe nursing home. His time with his grandmother is the only time he hasa grown up conversation. Apart from his grandmother his dog is the onlyother thing he cares about.

There is little plot to this movie. Larry gets a job at a garagevaleting cars. His co-workers tell him to steal loose change. He takesa shine to his female boss, he gets fired because his boss finds outthat he was fired from his previous job for stealing. In fact the sameguy owned both the places he gets fired from. His grandmother dies, heplays stupid pranks to antagonise people like keying cars or throwinghis hat on passing cars.

Somewhere along the line Larry grows up a little. Schwarztman playsLarry with a deadpan, downbeat comic charm. He is the only thing thatkeeps the film going. There is very little that happens in this offbeatfilm that feels long even though it is only 75 minutes long.

Synopsis
Larry (Jason Schwartzman) is content with his dog Arrow and booze, barely tolerating anything or anyone else. His marginally successful relationships include his grandmother, who keeps him afloat financially, and his best friend Norwood, who provides him with pharmaceuticals. But a chance encounter at a Jiffy Lube gives Larry a beguiling new boss and the impetus to head in another direction for a while. This movie showcases all that may be needed to help a person get unstuck in life: love (or an unrequited crush), friendship (or someone your family likes better than you) and family (or in this case a grandmother who will support you whenever you get fired from a job).

Cause it really doesn't have much of a plot, and the little thatresembles a plot doesn't seem to make a ton of sense.

It's basically about a self-absorbed 'loser' who played by someone elseother than Jason Swartzman would probably be tedious.

But Jason's natural charm and charisma redeems the character somewhatfrom feeling like a total prick and the 'movie' from being a totaltrainwreck.

I write movie as 'movie' because it really doesn't feel like a movie,it feels like maybe it would have worked better as a TV series split upto 3 parts instead (although I'm not sure that people would tune inevery week to see the next episode).

There are some okay scenes, mainly the ones between Jason and his (alsoreal life pet) dog, they have better chemistry together than Jason haswith any of his human co-stars in the movie.

So I would only remotely recommend this to hardcore Jason fans who hasto see everything he's in, if you're not too fussy about him give it askip, if you dislike him then well you will without a doubt hate it.
Absolutely charming and hilarious. Jason Schwartzman is pitch perfectas Larry, a slacker who gets fired from his job in a restaurant at thebeginning of the film, sipping through a straw from his Big Gulp.

Schwartzman isn't the only tour de force in the film, his dog Arrowmakes the perfect comedic counterpart, exasperated and non-plussed atmany of Larry's diatribes and philosophies.

Bob Byington deserves a lot of credit as well, his previous filmSomebody Up There Likes Me is equally hilarious, but 7 Chinese Brothersis less surreal and more rooted in character and pathos. 7CB has lotsof mainstream appeal and will undoubtedly be listed in with othericonic Schartzman roles.

7CB is always surprising, always pushing at the edges of conventionalnarratives. The film works so well because it is coming from a veryunique voice of storytelling and sense of humor. It's exciting to see afilm come out like this and almost instantly feel like a comedyclassic. Do yourself a favor and get a big gulp of 7 Chinese Brothers.
